Is your brain numbing from the boredom of your daily routine? Are you getting fed up with waking up, making breakfast and lunches, getting the kids to school, driving to work, driving home from work, making dinner, getting everybody to bed with the prospect of doing it all over gain tomorrow, and the day after that, and so on? This sameness is enough to drive even a sane person over the edge.

Occasionally we must shake ourselves out of the routine we are stuck in. A little time to ourselves would be a welcome break. There’s nothing wrong with stirring up a little fun now and then. There are times when we really do need a vacation.

You may think that just the planning of a vacation alone is not worth the hassle. It is a time consuming chore. Besides, with today’s economic situation, we shouldn’t take any time off and we can’t afford to get away to romantic places anyway. Do not give up. There are solutions to these problems. You can take a break and afford it too.

Many people around the world have discovered the joy and fascination of touring castles. When you first think of touring castles you make think of castles in England or Scotland. Obviously, for most of us, traveling outside the country is more expensive than just a regular vacation. Sometimes, however, people fail to realize how many truly stunning castles there are in the United States.

Bishop’s Castle in Colorado is one such masterpiece. Bishop’s Castle has become one of Colorado’s major tourist attractions. Even folks who live nearby visit the castle often. This particular castle is famous as it is being built by one man, Jim Bishop, and one man alone. Mr. Bishop began building his castle in 1969 and he still going strong.

It remains unfinished today because he is the only one working on it. It is open to the public and is free of charge, although donations are certainly welcome. People visit the castle from all over the world to marvel at one man’s love and dedication to building his own castle his own way from the ground up.

Every castle has its own story and each one is different. Touring castles can be a great way to step out of the everyday routine and see the majesty and mystery provided by different castles. There are many castles across America. Many of them are like Bishop’s Castle and don’t cost any money to see.

So you see vacationing does not have to cost an arm and a leg. You don’t have to go to Disney World in Orlando or Paris to have fun, and you won’t drop hundreds of dollars a day either if you take up castle surfing. This is not to say the Disney Resorts here and around the world aren’t great entertainment. They are. But if you can’t afford the tariff this year, you can have fun in much less expensive ways. Make that escape, yes and don’t forget the Great American Castle Tour can be a wonderful way to leave it all behind.

People tend to think of martial arts as being oriental, Kung Fu type fighting. However, the word ‘martial’ derives from the Latin word ‘mars, martis’, who was the Roman god of war. ‘Martial’, consequently, means ‘to do with war or fighting’.

As a result, martial can refer to Western ways of fighting too such as boxing and wrestling.

These martial arts have been in existence for thousands of years at least and originated on the battlefield where one’s competency in fighting was literally a matter of life and death. Wrestling was in the Olympic Games over 2,000 years ago.

Likewise, many of the oriental martial arts are just as old and came about because peasants were not permitted to bear arms in the social structures of the times.

In spite of the age of these martial arts, they did not become popular in the Developed world until Bruce Lee made them famous with his Kung Fu films in the early Seventies.

It is a little known fact that when Lee was sent to America at the age of 18 to avoid the wrath of a local Hong Kong mafia chief, he hoped to teach traditional martial arts, but was forbidden authorization by the local Chinese community.

There was an unwritten rule that non-Chinese were not to be trained in Chinese martial arts. Lee ignored the rule, and he claimed to have received death threats from powerful Chinese underworld leaders from America and Hong Kong.

Lee taught martial arts to a small group of famous Caucasians and even developed his own style known as Jeet Kune Do.

Jeet Kune Do used Lee’s amazing speed and strength in its moves. Three of Lee’s most famous moves were:

The Power Side Kick: with one kick, he could kick a 300 pound sack to hit a normal ceiling

The One Inch Punch: he could knock a trained fighter over with a punch that had travelled only one inch

The Lightning Snatch: with his arm by his side, he could snatch a nickel from an open hand three feet away and leave a penny behind in 5/100 ths of a second.

Individuals wished to be able to do the same. However, there are numerous different types of martial arts and many countries have their own peculiar style of fighting.

China has Judo and Kung Fu; Japan has Karate; Brazil has Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; Thailand has Muay Thai.. There are numerous other, usually oriental styles, as well, like Tae Kwando and Aikido but also French Kick Boxing.

Some martial arts are more defensive in character, but others are positively aggressive: Judo and Aikido are examples of defensive styles and Karate and boxing are much more aggressive in character. However, all martial arts teach self-discipline and the students develop more self-assurance. Martial arts are experiencing a renaissance in popularity at the moment, largely owing to UFC fights or mixed martial arts.

You might not approve of the violence of mixed martial arts, but it cannot be denied that many kids are learning a few martial arts, Western and Oriental, because of these popular TV fights.

Today, every schoolboy knows the story of William Webb Ellis, the Rugby School pupil “who with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it”. The presentation trophy for the Rugby World Cup is named the Webb Ellis trophy in his memory, and his “achievement” is honoured by a plaque at the school

There is only one thing wrong with this story. It simply is not a fact. It was not until four years after the death of Webb Ellis in 1876 that the story first saw the light of day and its source is thought to come from a local antiquarian and former Rugbeian Matthew Bloxam.

He was not a contemporary of Webb Ellis and claims that the story was told to him by an anonymous source some 53 years after the incident is alleged to have taken place.

In 1823, when the event is alleged to have happened, the rules of rugby had yet to be written and any alterations, such as the legality of carrying or running with the ball, were often agreed on an ad hoc basis a short time before the start of a game.

There were thus no formal rules for football during the period William Webb Ellis was at the school (1816-25). It was not until 1845, some 200 years after football was first played at Rugby School, that three pupils published the first written rules of the game.

For many years it had been the boys, and not the masters who had laid down the rules which were frequently modified by each new generation of students.

Guy’s Hospital Football Club, created in London in 1843, by old boys from Rugby School, has strong claims to be the oldest football club in the world. It definitely predates by 14 years the creation of Sheffield FC, believed to be the oldest club playing association football.

In 1871, after several contentious disputes with the Football Association, 21 clubs met in London to create an association of those clubs ‘who play the rugby-type game’.

And so the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was shaped. The first International rugby game was played on 27 March 1871 between England and Scotland. The English team wore white shirts adorned with a red rose and the Scots brown shirts with a thistle. (Scotland won the match).

The worries and conflicts regarding amateurism and professionalism had long proved a thorny topic. The representatives of Yorkshire and Lancashire are accredited with bringing in rules concerning amateurism in 1879.

These rules were finally formalized by the RFU in 1886. It is broadly believed that the northern clubs were in favour of the professional game whereas these northern bodies were strong advocates of amateurism,

However, disagreement arose over the controversy regarding ‘broken time’, the issue of whether players ought to receive compensation for taking time off work to play.

The northern clubs had a large number of working class players who had either to miss games due to working commitments, or give up their wages in order to play rugby. By 1892, this subject of broken time payments was a problem not just for northern clubs such as Bradford and Leeds but also for clubs in the south.

It became an anxiety of the RFU: these broken time repayments would become a quick path to professionalism.

On 29 August 1895, 20 clubs from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire met at the George Hotel, Huddersfield and decided to resign from the RFU and create the Northern Rugby Football Union, which from 1922 became the Rugby Football League.

The argument about compensation was one which at the time was also upsetting soccer and cricket. Each game had to work out a compromise; rugby’s stance was the most radical. Amateurism was strictly enforced, and anyone accepting payment for playing rugby league was banned.

However, on 26 August 1995 the International Rugby Board declared rugby union an “open” game and thereby removed all restrictions on payments or advantages to those connected with the game.

It did this because of a committee conclusion that to do so was the only manner to end the hypocrisy of sham amateurism and to keep control of rugby union. The wheel had turned full circle.

There are almost certainly as many people walking about with tattoos nowadays as ever there were at any other time in history. There was probably a lull in tattooing for a hundred years or so until the Nineties, but young crowd all over the world have taken to them like never before since the tribal days in the Developed world. The big difference in the Developed world is that young women are wearing tattoos as well now.

The actual history of tattoos is very indistinct, their history is that lengthy. The oldest tattoo that we have discovered so far is on Oetzi The Iceman, who died around 5,300 years ago. His tattoo was a straightforward grid of horizontal and vertical lines. However, tattooing was almost certainly going on long before Oetzi’s era. But what was their objective?

One theory concerning Oetzi’s tattoos (all 57 of them) is that they were done over painful joints, so that an acupuncturist would better be able to insert needles into the right places if his joints ached, but this is definitely not the only reason people had tattoos.

Nowadays most Western tattoos are for decoration and it is likely that that has always been the case, although warriors would have used them to seem more terrible in battle. They might also have been a symbol of social status.

I introduced to the mother of an Algerian-Berber friend of mine twenty years ago. She had lived on the top of her mountain alone for numerous years and I was honoured to be taken out to meet her. She was very small and petite and every inch of skin that I could see was tattooed. Her face, her hands and her feet.

When I asked my friend why she had had that done, he said that it was convention. She had once been the most beautiful woman in the region and so that everybody would understand that for long after she had lost her physical beauty, she was tattooed. It was an an expensive and lavish mark to say that she had been the most beautiful woman in that region in her day.

Russian archaeologists found mummies in the Altai Mountains of Siberia which were 2,400 years old. These individuals had animals tattooed all over them – some real and some imaginary animals. It is thought that some of these tattoos were decorative and that others were symbols of rank.

The Egyptians used tattoos freely and lots of mummies have been discovered that are entirely covered in tattoos. Women were tattooed too, but it is thought that just women and the husband were permitted to see a woman’s markings These mummies go back 2,100 years.

Lots of Thai men have a large tattoo on their chest and on their back. These men have normally been in the army and the tattoo is meant to prevent them from being shot by staving off bullets. This is an ancient practice in Thailand and probably predates the invention of the gun.

Stock car racing was really born out of the inclination of owners of modified stock (meaning: ‘off the sales lot’) cars to show off their vehicles, craftsmanship and driving skills. The desire to ‘soup up’ these stock cars came from the wish to elude the law enforcement agencies chasing them when they were running moonshine or put another way, bootlegging.

For the period of Prohibition, a lot of moonshine whiskey was being made in isolated regions of the Appalachians and in particular the Allegheny Mountains, from where it was transported by private carriers in their own stock cars often to the southern states. Many of these drivers souped up their cars in order to have more chance of escape.

When Prohibition was revoked in 1933, this bootlegging continued in order to avoid paying duty, but it slowly died out. However, the fire had already been lit and the drivers of these cars liked to race them in their free time for pride and reward, especially in the southern states and particularly in North Carolina, where most of the stock car teams are still to be found.

NASCAR was established by Bill French in 1947 when he crafted the first set of uniform rules and a championship points system so that an overall winner of all the season’s races could be worked out.

However, the conditions in the early days were pretty crude. The cars were often second-hand and worn and the track was just earth and dust. Under these conditions the cars quickly fell apart, so NASCAR allowed competing cars to be customized or strengthened. Safety aspects for the drivers were also introduced. Nowadays, the NASCAR instruction manual clearly defines all the modifications that are allowed on contending cars.

These days it is a mistake to call NASCAR cars ‘stock cars’; they are anything but stock cars. NASCAR cars are hand made. The frames are different from stock cars in that they are manufactured from tubes for strength; the tin is sheet steel and the engine blocks start as just that – a bare block. What the engineers do with it after that is a closely guarded secret.

The safety of the driver is also taken very earnestly. The driver is shielded from injury by a heavy roll cage. Strong round and square tubes make up the car’s framework, while thinner tubing is employed at the front and back ends to soak up the impact of crashes by crushing slowly. These are called clips and the front clip will also allow the engine to fall away under the car, rather than be forced straight back into the driver.

The bodies of NASCAR cars are not easy to make, often taking ten days to complete. However, NASCAR rules cover the general body shape and they provide thirty templates to make manufacturing a NASCAR car a little simpler.

But it does not stop there. There are different rules and templates for different sorts of races on different tracks, because the cars that race on superspeedways are not the same as those used for short tracks or endurance races.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece writes on many topics, but is at present involved with thinking about the Poconos Raceway in Pennsylvania.

Pisa is situated in the north of Italy. It is a small town with a population of only 100,000. Pisa though principally known for the leaning tower has other places of tourist attractions as well. This town served as the naval base in Italy during the Roman era.

Pisa rose to occupy the peak in military and economic fronts during the 12th century when it was regarded as a major naval force and trading city as a result of which the major part of its architecture could be dated back to the 12th century. We have mentioned a few of the tourist spots in Pisa below.

It is the Leaning Tower that is most renowned not only in Pisa but the whole of Italy. It has acquired fame thanks to its deformity. Nevertheless it attracts thousands from across the world who relish in taking pictures of the Leaning Tower.

Entrance is restricted inside the tower always for fear of safety, even though it is possible to gain entry into the tower by spending 15 Euros. It is better to reserve your place in advance because there is a limit for the number of people to be allowed into the Tower on a daily basis.

The baptistery in Pisa is where the most of citizens in medieval Pisa would have been baptised into the Christian religion. The original structure of the baptistery in Pisa dates back to the 12th century though it was not fully completed until two centuries later.

This baptistery reflects both the Romanesque and the Gothic methods of sculpture in the sense that one can see a pool-like structure in the middle of the building into which water would have been filled and people would have immersed as a ritualistic custom.

The Cathedral in Pisa is an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture that is so typical of the Tuscany region of Italy.

It was in the 11th century that this building was constructed with the grandiose interior held firm by 68 columns. The main wonder of this Cathedral are the green and white marble interiors. You have to pay an admission fee of 2 Euros to visit this Cathedral.

Travelling across the River Arno, the tourist can make a visit to all these tourist places in Pisa at a leisurely pace by paying a ticket fee of 5 Euros.

There are so many interesting tourist attractions in Pisa you must allocate sufficient time.

Zodiac symbols have a incredible position in the Japanese history. Even today, they haven’t lost their significance. As per the historical facts, Chinese method of calculating time in twelve units is the origin of these symbols.

The zodiac symbols came into existence due to the zoning of time and direction into twelve different blocks. Each one of these blocks is then given a name of an animal. Each zone has a certain animal according to the Japanese tradition. People born in a certain zone are considered to have particular common personality traits in common with the animal of the zone.

The rat is one of the most main zodiac symbols of Japan. People born in the rat zone are believed to be energetic, honest, reliable and beautiful. Along with this they are considered to be determine and hard workers while being short tempered.

Believe it or not, you possess enough potential for the success in life if you are born in the year of ox. You can stimulate others also and lead them to success. Intelligent, eloquent and patient – all these great qualities suit you.

The Tiger is believed to be unyielding and short tempered as well as sensitive at the same time. Courage is the overriding virtue of the tiger but they are also considered to be self centered and mean. People born in the year of the tiger are believed to be deep thinkers and comforters to the nearest ones.

Rabbit stands for good fortune and great aspirations. People having this zodiac symbol are faithful and are admired by others. Also they are fluent and possess exceptional abilities.

The Dragon represents good health and energy along with stubbornness and short temperedness. At the same time they are considered to be brave, truthful, sensitive and trustworthy. People born in the year of the dragon are considered to be the most peculiar out of all the zodiac signs.

The Snake zodiac symbol is sought to represent deep thinkers and rare speakers that own immense intelligence. They are considered to be money wise, tenacious and perseverant.

Financial success in life is predicted for the people who were born in a horse zone. Although they are talkative and having sharp wisdom, they tend to be impatient and short-tempered.

If you have heard of Japanese script called Kanji you have to understand that it has its origins in China. The characters from Chinese symbol are throughout obvious in the Japanese script as we find it now in their logographic style of writing. In fact once you translate the Kanji script you will find characters from Chinese Hans symbols.

So what is the actual story behind Chinese kanji symbols and how come they are credited to Japan today? Well, it all started out when Chinese articles started coming into Japan as imports with Han character inscriptions on them.

The history bears confirmation to this fact from many examples such as the Han dynasty ruler had presented a gold seal with Hans’ inscription to the Japanese. What we still wonder is that how and when the Hans characters were started to be used in Japan and developed.

The most believable account is that the first people to make use of the Chinese Kanji script symbols in Japan were actually Chinese immigrants. Otherwise the Japanese had no real means of understanding or comprehending and even learning the Chinese script.

With the passage of time the ties between the two countries became firmer. There was a constant need of written documentation that was to be transferred between both the countries. Hence a formal body of people known as the fuhito was set up which was trained to handle the documents written in the Chinese script. This paved the way for the acceptance of the Chinese Kanji script in Japan.

When Chinese Kanji script came to Japan there was nothing like formal writing system existing in the country. Initially the Japanese started writing with the Chinese script itself but steadily they started developing a script of their own with the aid of the Kanji script which would be compatible with Japanese grammar.

Yet another improvement made was that the Japanese were presently using the Chinese characters to write Japanese words. This is what gave birth to modern kana syllables. The difference was that whereas the Chinese used their characters as symbols that lacked any phonetic value, the Japanese introduced a phonetic value to the Chinese script.

Kanji script though accepted more or less as Japanese is used more regularly in China than in Japan. People also believe that the Kanji script of both the countries look almost the same. In reality the Japanese and Chinese Kanji script has lot of difference as Chinese Kanji symbols are shaped differently.

There is another difference in Chinese and Japanese Kanji script when we apply it to the reading part. As discussed the Chinese treat the Kanji characters as symbols without any phonetic suggestion but in Japanese script every syllable has phonetic value.

kanji symbols from China are becoming more commonly used as tattoo designs .

Wales has a long history of music and has been called the ‘land of song’ since at least the Nineteenth Century. This reference to Wales as the land of song, almost certainly comes from the enthusiastic singing in Welsh churches and at Welsh sports meetings, especially at rugby matches. However, Wales’ links with music go much further back than that.

Wales has a history of folk music which is closely associated with Scottish and Irish folk music. There are a number of types of musical gathering that are comparable to those in other Celtic countries in the United Kingdom. For instance there is the twmpath (folk dance session), g?yl werin (folk festival) and noson lawen (a traditional party similar to the Gaelic “C?ilidh”).

Modern Welsh folk musicians have often resurrected traditions which had been suppressed or forgotten, and have competed with imported and native rock and pop trends. This has been particularly the case since the 1990′s.

Despite modern Welsh trends in music, Wales will always be connected with Male Voice Choirs such as the Morriston Orpheus Choir and Treorchy Male Voice Choir which enjoy world wide fame.

These choirs were frequently made up of workers from one village or one coal mine and so it was quite natural for men to sing when one town played against another, especially if that game was Wales’ national sport of rugby. The first time the Welsh National Anthem, ‘Yr Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’ (‘The Old Country of my Fathers’, normally translated as ‘Land of My Fathers’), was sung at an International sporting event was in 1905

Along side the choirs, brass bands sprang up in villages, working men’s associations, churches and at work especially in South Wales where brass bands are still very popular. In fact, the Cory Band is one of the most successful brass bands in the world.

There were more than a few world famous Welsh singers in the Twentieth Century and some of them are still singing to jam-packed audiences worldwide. Ivor Novello was one of the first who became well-known during the First World War as a singer songwriter. Then there was Geraint Evans and Delme Bryn-Jones during the Second World War.

After that, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey began their singing careers in the 1950′s and are still singing fifty years later. There were also well-liked bands in the Seventies and Eighties such as Man and Budgie and solo singers such as Shakin’ Stevens, nnie Tyler and John Cale (Velvet Underground).

In more recent times, we have seen the Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, Super Furry Animals and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci; the latter two bands being famous for lots of their songs’ lyrics being in Welsh.

There have always been operatic singers as well such as Rebecca Evans, Aled Jones, Bryn Tervel and Charlotte Church. Cardiff hosts the ‘Singer of the World’ competition but the Wales also has its very own Eisteddfod, where Pavarotti sang for years. It was because of Wales tradition as a nation of singers that Paul Robeson visited Wales in the Fifties

The idea of England probably brings up many images. Literature, tea, Big Ben, cool accents, fish and chips and of course, castles. Every little kid has dreamed of living in a castle or palace someday. We see them everywhere. We romanticize them, put them in cartoons like Cinderella, jigsaw puzzles, and Disney even uses one for a logo. Often photographed and always iconic, England has some very famous ones.

Windsor Castle – Windsor is the largest castle with continuous occupation for over 900 years. Built upon the ancient royal grounds of the Saxon Kings of the dark ages, this fortress and palace was also constructed by William the Conqueror as a wooden Motte (moat) and Bailey. It was built primarily to guard London’s western approaches, but eventually became a royal residence as well. Despite numerous additions and changes the current wall and central mound stand over the exact same ones built by William.

It has a storied history including being the royal residence of the Queen. It has survived numerous wars, ranging from sieges in the medieval ages to all the way to World War 2, and even an accidental fire in the 1980′s. When the queen is in residence it the Royal Standard flies high, when she away the Union Jack can be seen. England’s highest knighthood, the Order of the Garter, meet there once a year for dinner with Her Majesty.

Caernarvon Castle – This castle is steeped in mythology and lore, and is surrounded by the emerald green hills of Wales. The castle is said to be the original home of the Druid Merlin, who was born in a cave nearby. The castle also guards the traditional road to Ireland. For a great home loan try Home Loan today.

Windsor is also the official home of the Royal Family and has a long and storied history. It has survived numerous wars, ranging from sieges in the medieval ages to all the way to World War 2, and even an accidental fire in the 1980′s. When the queen is in residence it the Royal Standard flies high, when she away the Union Jack can be seen.

The Tower of London – This is arguably the most famous castle in the world. Soon after his invasion of England in 1066, William the Conqueror began building the Tower of London. Originally just a wooden Motte (moat) and Bailey along the Thames River, he then expanded it into the rock walled central fortress and keep known as the “White Tower,” completed in 1097.

During the long course of English history it was continuously expanded. Now it covers over 18 acres, boasts 21 towers, is home to the crown jewels, is guarded by the famous Beef Eaters (who got their names because they were paid in beef) and is sometimes used as a Royal residence. It also has an infamous history as a prison and place of trials and executions. The most famous of which is the execution of Anne Bolin. The castle also is home to the famous “Traitor’s Gate” through which many prisoners entered, but never exit. These three are just a few of the many historic and beautiful castles and this is just in England alone, there are tons more to read about and maybe someday even visit!
